On Saturday the 2nd of March 1st Kirkbymoorside Scout Troop gathered at the Omega Oak Barn Care Home. Our mission? To spread the joy, connect with the elderly residents and create beautiful Easter cards.
The Scouts set up tables with colourful cards, crayons and stickers. The room buzzed with creativity as the Scouts chatted with the residents and created cards together.
After the card-making session, it was time for games. The Scouts set up Jenga, snakes and ladders, darts, dominos but the favourite game of all was definitely the pop up pirate. Much to the delight of the residents the pirate kept jumping out of his barrel to roll across the floor. Laughter filled the room time after time.
As the Scouts said goodbye they knew they had made a difference. The care home had become a little brighter. And with that, the Scouts left, their hearts full, knowing that sometimes the simplest acts of kindness create the most beautiful memories.
Please read what some of our Scouts thought of the visit:
- “I think visiting the residents helps them because it gives the elderly something to do. It makes them feel cared for and definitely makes them happier. It’s nice to see the residents happy. By visiting the care home I have learnt that elderly people need our help and respect.” Leon age 11
- “I think visiting the care home helps the residents who don’t see their friends and family very often. (…) Going to visit the residents makes me feel like I’ve done something good” Tyler age 11
- “Spending time at the care home helps the residents when they are feeling lonely. It makes me feel good when I can see how happy they are” William age 11
- “I have enjoyed spending time at the care home. I have enjoyed meeting new people whilst doing crafts and games. I think they have enjoyed my visit as it was someone to spend time with and a new activity to do. (I hope they did anyway!) It has given me an opportunity to meet new people and get involved in something different. I am always happy to visit and happy to go again :)” Lewis age 11
- “Visiting the care home has helped us learn patience and to communicate loudly and clearly. Scouts visiting the care home helps the elderly residents because some won’t get visitors very often, if at all. Bringing board games and crafts entertains them and keeps them busy and happy. In the process we learnt what they used to do when they were younger. It is important to visit the care home, because it doesn’t just make us feel good but it also makes the elderly people happy.” Storm age 13
- “I think visiting care home helped the elderly because they had a friend for them to entertain them and help them at the same time. (…) I do think it helped 1st Kirkbymoorside Scouts with respect, patience, resilience and curiosity. I was quite curious as well because I was wondering if anyone else had been there to help before us. My favourite bit was when I was playing darts with two people called Joy and John. They were surprisingly good as well.” Matthew age 10
- “I enjoyed the afternoon at the care home because I liked meeting the residents and playing games with them, especially darts which I had not played before. I enjoyed the new experience. The people were really, really nice. I think that they really enjoyed the afternoon too.” Marcus age 11
